Tacos El Gordo
de Tijuana B.C.
It’s tough to find a place to eat for under $10 on the Strip, but if you like Mexican food, there is a good taco place you should try. It has a great reputation with locals and tourists alike. Here, you can get authentic Mexican tacos, or street tacos as most people call them. You get your choice of meat, and I mean choice. They have the standard meat for tacos, but they also have exotic meat, such as brains, tongue and tripe. My mother would cook brains when I was a kid, but I haven’t had it since.
There are several windows where you place your order. Each window is for a different meat because the meat is cooking as you order, and it is cut up in front of you. You will need a tray first, then wait in line. After you get your food, you take it to the cashier on the other side and can also order your drinks. The place is usually crowded, more so on the weekends. The last time I was there was an early Saturday afternoon for lunch. I had three people in front of me in the line for asada. The exotic meats window had no line. However, there was one person who walked up in a leisurely fashion and ordered, so exotic meats have their fans.
The tacos are made with a healthy amount of cilantro, so they are spicy enough that I don’t need any hot sauce. They do have freshly sliced limes in their condiment area that I like to use on the tacos to mellow the cilantro and increase the flavor of the seasoning.
I ordered three tacos for $2.40 each, and a soda pop. With Nevada sales tax of 8.2 percent added, the cost is still a little under $10. Whether this fills you up or not depends upon how big your appetite is, but I find it to be a good lunch that is enough until my next meal.
Tacos El Gordo is located on the Strip at Convention Center Drive. This is just south of the Encore hotel. There is a second restaurant nearby with the same name. This is simply a second location of the same restaurant.
